Overview
Google Drive is a mainstream cloud storage and collaboration service tightly integrated with Google accounts and Google Workspace.
Security basics: data is protected in transit (TLS/HTTPS) and encrypted at rest. By default, Google manages the encryption keys, which means Google can access file contents when needed (for example to deliver features, detect abuse, or comply with legal requests).
Higher-privacy option: some Google Workspace editions offer Client‑Side Encryption (CSE). With CSE, encryption happens in the browser before upload, and the organization controls the keys via an external key service. This can reduce provider access to file contents, but it may also limit features such as search, previews, or certain integrations.
Privacy considerations: the biggest risk is often metadata—your identity, sharing relationships, file names, timestamps, access logs, and usage analytics. To improve privacy, avoid public links, share with least privilege, use separate accounts for different identities, and add your own client‑side encryption (e.g., tools like Cryptomator) when you need 'zero‑knowledge' storage.
