Who is this for?

βœ“ Good for you if:

  • β€’ You want complete control over your smart home data
  • β€’ You are comfortable setting up a Raspberry Pi or running Docker
  • β€’ You have multiple smart home brands you want to unify in one interface
  • β€’ You want to build automations without a monthly subscription
  • β€’ You prioritize keeping your home data off third-party servers

Overview

Smart home devices from Google, Amazon, and Apple send your daily routines to the cloud β€” who's home, when you wake up, when you leave. Home Assistant takes a different approach. It runs on your own hardware (a Raspberry Pi, an old PC, or a NAS) and integrates with over 3,000 devices and brands, all processed locally. Your light schedules, motion sensors, and automations stay on your network. Home Assistant has over 4,000 contributors and releases updates every month. It supports modern smart home standards like Matter and Thread, and has dedicated iOS and Android apps. If you want remote access, there is an optional paid cloud service called Nabu Casa, but it is completely optional β€” the core platform is free and fully functional without it. Setting up Home Assistant takes some technical comfort, but the community is massive and documentation is excellent.
