Overview
Home Assistant is the leading open-source home automation platform that puts local control and privacy first. It runs entirely on your own hardware β a Raspberry Pi, a NAS, or a dedicated machine β and integrates with over 3,000 smart home devices and services including Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and hundreds of branded products like Philips Hue, IKEA TRADFRI, and Google Nest. All automations, device states, and user data remain on your local network. No data is sent to the cloud by default. Home Assistant is developed by the non-profit Nabu Casa and has one of the largest open-source communities in the smart home space, with monthly releases. An optional paid cloud subscription (Home Assistant Cloud by Nabu Casa) enables remote access and voice assistant integration, but it is entirely optional. The platform is free, fully open source under Apache 2.0, and runs on consumer hardware.
