VeraCrypt
Open-source disk with plausible deniability and system
VeraCrypt is a tool for encrypting your files. It helps you keep more control over your data.
Who is this for?
✓ Good for you if:
- • You need to encrypt entire drives or system partitions
- • You want plausible deniability (hidden volumes)
- • You need strong (AES, Serpent, , or cascaded)
- • You prefer open-source disk
- • You need pre-boot for system
⚠ Think twice if:
- • You want the simplest setup (VeraCrypt is advanced)
- • You need (designed for local disk )
- • You're not comfortable with advanced technical setup
- • You want automatic (requires manual mounting)
- • You need mobile device (primarily desktop/laptop)
Overview
VeraCrypt is a free, open-source tool that encrypts entire hard drives, USB drives, or creates encrypted containers to protect your sensitive files. Think of it like a safe for your computer - you can encrypt an entire disk partition (like your entire hard drive) or create an encrypted file container that acts like a virtual disk. When you mount an encrypted volume, VeraCrypt decrypts it on-the-fly so you can use it normally, but when it's unmounted, the data is completely encrypted and unreadable. VeraCrypt uses strong encryption algorithms and supports multiple authentication methods including passwords and key files. The application can even create hidden volumes inside encrypted volumes, providing plausible deniability - if someone forces you to reveal your password, they'll see the outer volume but not the hidden one. VeraCrypt is completely free, doesn't require any accounts, and all encryption happens on your device. It's particularly useful for protecting sensitive data on portable drives or creating encrypted backups.

- Encryption protocols
- AES, Serpent, , Cascade Encryption
- VeraCrypt uses multiple algorithms including AES, Serpent, , and cascade combinations. The key is derived from the user password using PBKDF2 with increased iteration counts (655,331 for system partition, 500,000 for standard volumes). VeraCrypt supports key files as additional factors. The key never leaves the device and is never stored unencrypted. All and decryption operations happen on the local device. VeraCrypt uses on-the-fly , meaning data is encrypted/decrypted transparently as it is read/written.

- VeraCrypt is maintained by IDRIX, which is based in France. However, since VeraCrypt encrypts data locally and stores encrypted volumes on the user's device or storage media, IDRIX does not have access to user data. All encrypted data remains on the user's devices, so users have complete control over data residency.
- VeraCrypt does not retain data on external servers. All encrypted volume data is stored locally on the user's device or storage media. The application does not transmit data to external servers. Users have complete control over - encrypted volumes persist on storage devices until manually deleted. VeraCrypt does not require any cloud services or accounts.
