Overview

LineageOS is a free and open-source Android distribution (a “custom ROM”) built on top of the Android Open Source

Project (AOSP). It replaces a device’s stock firmware to provide a cleaner Android experience, extended device support, and additional privacy and customization controls.

Technically, LineageOS relies on AOSP components plus device-specific hardware support (“device trees”, kernels, and vendor blobs) that vary by model. Privacy benefits often come from reducing or avoiding preinstalled vendor apps and Google services, tightening permissions, and gaining control over system-level behavior. However, compatibility with some apps may change because some apps depend on Google Play services or device attestation

checks.

Why it matters: The operating system shapes what data can leave your phone by default. A community-maintained ROM can reduce vendor bloat, extend security patch

availability for older devices, and give you more control over trackers and background services—key steps for “de-Googling” a phone.

Example: A user installs LineageOS on a supported device, uses F-Droid for open-source apps, optionally installs microG for limited Google compatibility, and configures strict permissions and firewall

/DNS settings to reduce tracking.
