Overview
Lemmy implements a federated discussion platform using the ActivityPub protocol (W3C standard). The platform is built in Rust using the Actix web framework with PostgreSQL for data storage. Users join independent servers (instances), each with autonomous policies and moderation. Instances can be configured as private, restricting access to registered users only, or public. The platform includes communities (similar to subreddits), posts, comments, voting, and private messaging. Private messaging is available but messages are not end-to-end encrypted and are accessible to instance administrators. Lemmy uses JWT tokens for authentication, bcrypt for password hashing, and supports two-factor authentication via TOTP. Users can delete accounts and associated content. The federated architecture means data is shared across servers when interacting with users on other instances. Users can self-host instances for complete control over data, policies, and moderation. The codebase is open source (AGPL-3.0) and maintained by community contributors.
