Overview
Pixelfed is a decentralized photo-sharing platform that gives you control over your photos and data. Unlike Instagram, Pixelfed isn't owned by one company - instead, it's made up of independent servers (called instances) that can talk to each other. You choose which server to join based on its community rules, or you can host your own server for complete control. Pixelfed has no ads, no algorithms manipulating your feed, and no tracking. You control who sees your photos with privacy settings - accounts can be private, requiring approval for followers, and posts can be public, unlisted, or followers-only. Pixelfed includes features like content warnings, sensitive media controls, and the ability to download all your photos and data whenever you want. The platform uses SSL encryption for secure connections and supports two-factor authentication for extra security. However, it's important to know that direct messages are not end-to-end encrypted. Pixelfed is open source, meaning anyone can check the code, and it's maintained by an active community. The platform is free to use and works in your web browser or through mobile apps.
